Who is Nail KESOVA?

Sheik Nail Kesova was born in Istanbul in 1939, and during his formative years, he was influenced by his family to interest himself in mysticism and music. He graduated from the Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences and the Institute of Business Administration of Istanbul University in 1960.

During that time, he was accepted as a member of the Istanbul Mevlevi Mutrib Group (mystic music group). His tombstone headdress, the "sikke", was "tekbir'ed" -ceremoniously delivered- to him by Hafiz Sadettin Heper. In the years that followed, he studied music under the tutorship of Semazenbasi (senior dervish) Ahmet Bican Kasaboglu. He was commissioned as a Semazen (whirling dervish), a role he filled from 1970 to 1982. In 1982, he was elevated to the position of Semazenbasi (senior dervish). He served as "Na'than" – improviser / chanter of the praying the verses of the Prophet (Kesides), as "Halilzen" - cymbalist, as "Semazen", and as "Semazenbasi" in mystic music concerts and semas in Turkey and in many other countries.

In 1994, he was recommended by the "postnisin" Selman Tüzün to be called "postnisin" (assistant of the spiritual leader) to supervise rites given by the leader of the Mevlevi Order. The postnisin, also called "Dede", can, at times, supervise rites himself. He received this license the same year. Later, on September 30th, 1994, Nail Kesova was given the license as the "Destari Serif" - accredited "postnisin" by Dr. Celaleddin Celebi, the grandson of the twenty first generation of the great Mevlana, with a ceremony held in accordance with Mevlevi traditions.

The Sema consists of seven parts:

1. First is an eulogy, the “Nat-I Serif”, for the prophet, who represents love, and for all the prophets who came before him.

2. Next is the beating of the kudum, the kettle drums, symbolizing the God's command: “Be!”

3. An instrumental improvisation, "Taksim", played on the "ney", the reed flute, follows which symbolizes God’s breathe, which gives life to everything.

4. The forth part of the ritual is the mutual greetings of the "semazens" and their thrice repeated circular walk, the Sultan Veled Walk, accompanied by music called the “peshrev”. It symbolizes the greetings of soul to soul.

5. The fifth part is the Sema ritual itself and consists of four salutes or “Selams”.

The first selam is the birth of man through the truth. (This comes out of the belief that each individual is both created and creator himself).

The second selam is the expression of the rapture of man in the face of the splendor of creations, of the omnipotence and greatness of God.

The third selam is the transformation of man’s rapture into love and, thereby, the sacrifice of the mind to love. It is the complete submission of the "me" and "I" to the loved one, the annihilation of self with the Lover. It is perfect Unity! During this selam, the "semazen" may be lost in ecstasy, but they will consciously leave this state at the end of the selam. The aim of the Sema is not uncontrolled ecstasy and the loss of conscious thought, rather it is the opposite – to embrace the Unity of God consciously.

The forth selam represents the end of the spiritual journey, and the "Semazen" returns to his role in the creation, that of loving and serving God and all of His creation.

6. The four selams are followed by a reading from the Quran.

7. The Sema ritual ends with a prayer for the repose of the souls of all the prophets and all believers.
